"If this $1,500,000 bond issue passes it will put an end to segregation in our great university. In other words it simply means a vote for this bond issue will mix the white, yellow, red and black races together in our educational institutions. The law creating the medical school and hospital provides that the state of Mississippi pay $4,000,000.00, the federal government pay $3,000,000.00, and Hinds County pay $1,500,000.00. We are definitely in favor of a medical school and hospital, but we want all the people in Mississippi to pay the $3,000,000.00 that the federal government would pay, and the $1,500,000.00 that Hinds County would pay; thus keep our university white and controlled by white Mississippians instead of Washington bureaucrats and Negroes. Please read what these men of authority say about federal aid to education. A U.S. Supreme Court decision says that 'the federal government has the right to control anything that it gives federal aid to.' Congressman Whittington says ... 'whenever the federal government appropriates the federal government controls.' Governor Tuck of Virginia says ... 'there's no such thing as federal aid without federal control and dictation.' Senator Jim Byrnes of South Carolina, speaking at Washington and Lee University concerning federal control, said ... 'there is danger, that the individual-- whether farmer, worker, manufacturer, lawyer or doctor-- will soon be an economic slave pulling an oar in the galley of the state.' Dr. Charles Seymour, president of Yale University, warned universities everywhere not to accept federal aid. He said ... 'to do so would rob them of their freedom. We should sacrifice everything else before freedom, and the universities should set the example." Major Fred Sullens, editor of Jackson daily news, says ... 'federal aid to education would mean federal control of education. Federal control of education would mean the end of segregation. Could we face a graver danger?' We appeal to you for the sake of your children and grandchildren to vote against this bond issue. If you are a white man and believe in white supremacy, this is your time to stand up and be counted. Vote against it. Jeff Davis Klan No. 2, Realm of Mississippi, Knights of Ku Klux Klan, 3151 Delta Drive, phone 3-1808, Jackson, Miss."
