Included among the papers are: a copy of the marriage license of Jefferson Davis and Varina Howell (February 23, 1845); a letter of Jefferson Davis to the Illinois State University Philomathean Society (March 27, 1856); a paper on the role of the Mississippi Riflemen in the siege of Monterey, Mexico, that was written by Jefferson Davis (April 1, 1885); a letter from Isaiah Montgomery to Jefferson Hayes-Davis concerning clippings in the Commercial Appeal (September 8, 1919); and two newspaper clippings. One article is entitled "Extracts of a letter from Captain James Kempe to his friend in this city," dated Camp Jackson, January 9, 1815, and is taken from the January 18, 1815, edition of the Mississippi Republican. The letter deals with the Battle of New Orleans in the War of 1812.
