Foster comments on life in occupied Natchez, reports on various battles, and describes the appearance and manners of Union soldiers. The majority of her entries cover the period from July 7 through November 15, 1863. Foster resumes the narrative on July 18, 1865, describing the lives of her family during the hard economic times of Reconstruction and the bleak prospects for single women of that era. She comments briefly on the feeling of the southern people under military rule. There is only one entry each for the years 1870 through 1872.
