The bulk of the collection is the papers of Dr. John George Archer, Jr., 1911-1967, containing personal correspondence, speeches, volumes of medical notes and articles, a calendar and appointment book, and papers of various medical societies: Mississippi Society of Internal Medicine, Mississippi Heart Association, Mississippi State Medical Education Board, and the Mississippi State Medical Association. There are correspondence, council and board minutes, committee papers, programs and convention papers of the Mississippi State Medical Association, 1957-1964.

John Archer, America's first medical graduate, was the father of Stevenson Archer (1786-1848). His son, James Archer (1811-1898), married in 1836, Mary Ann Hunt, daughter of David Hunt of Natchez. James Archer's son, John George Archer, Sr., married Priscilla W. Finlay and had four children: Dr. John George Archer, Jr., Bettie Finlay Archer, James Hunt Archer (died in infancy) and George Ferguson Archer, who married Marian McTyeire. Priscilla W. Finlay Archer was also related to the Moore Family. Dr. John George Archer graduated from Vanderbilt University in 1912 and from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in 1916. He practiced medicine for many years and was a partner in the Drs. Gamble Brothers and Archer Clinic, Greenville, Mississippi. He was active in the Mid-South Postgraduate Medical Assembly, Delta Medical Association, and was president of the Mississippi State Medical Association.
